Introducing LAYERS: Why listening is always the first step

Over the years, I've noticed something that many of us have in common.

When we feel anxious, overwhelmed, hurt, stressed or emotional, our first instinct is often to make the feeling go away.

We distract ourselves. We overthink. We seek reassurance. We push through. We tell ourselves to "get on with it."

But what if the feeling isn't the problem?

What if it's information?

This idea sits at the heart of a framework I use with many of my clients called

LAYERS.

The first step is simple:

L = Listen

Before we judge our thoughts. Before we challenge them. Before we try to change how we feel.

We listen.

One of the questions I often encourage clients to ask themselves is:

"What am I thinking and feeling right now?"

It sounds simple, but many people realise they have never really stopped to ask themselves that question.

Instead, they move straight into fixing mode.

The problem is that when we skip the listening stage, we often miss what our emotions are trying to tell us.

Anxiety may be highlighting uncertainty. Anger may be pointing towards a boundary. Sadness may be asking for compassion. Overwhelm may be telling us we need rest.

Listening doesn't mean staying stuck.

It doesn't mean agreeing with every thought that enters your mind.

It simply means becoming curious enough to understand what is happening beneath the surface.

Because there is always more beneath what we see.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be sharing more of the LAYERS framework and how each step can help us better understand ourselves and navigate life's challenges.

For now, perhaps pause for a moment and ask yourself:

What am I thinking and feeling right now?
