The LAYERS Method™
Understanding your emotions one layer at a time.
When emotions feel overwhelming, it can be difficult to understand what you are actually feeling—or what you need. The LAYERS Method™ is a six-stage reflective framework created by counsellor Pamela Statham to help you pause, look beneath the immediate reaction and respond with greater understanding, regulation and self-compassion.
There is always more beneath what we see.
We often react to the emotion we notice first, anxiety, anger, guilt, sadness or overwhelm, without understanding what may be sitting beneath it.
The LAYERS Method™ was created from my experience as a counsellor and my belief that our emotions are not problems to eliminate. They are messages to listen to with curiosity and compassion.
These six letters were never the destination. They became a way of slowing the process down: helping us move from automatic reaction towards greater awareness, regulation and self-trust.
The six layers
L
L — Listen
Pause and notice the thoughts, feelings and messages asking for your attention.
A
A — Acknowledge
Recognise what you are experiencing without judging, dismissing or criticising yourself.
Y
Y — Yield with Curiosity
Slow down and gently explore what may be sitting beneath the immediate reaction.
E
E — Embody
Notice where the emotion is being held or experienced within your body.
R
R — Regulate
Support your nervous system so that you can respond from a steadier, safer place.
S
S — Self-Soothe
Offer yourself the reassurance, compassion and care you need in that moment.
Who can The LAYERS Method™ support?
The LAYERS Method™ can be adapted to support many different emotional experiences, including:
• Anxiety and overthinking
• Stress, overwhelm and burnout
• Grief and loss
• Relationship and attachment patterns
• Menopause and emotional change
• Self-worth and confidence
You do not need to wait until you are completely overwhelmed.
The method offers a practical way to pause, understand what is happening beneath the surface and identify what you may need next.
